SURVEY OF GLASS SCULPTURE

“Meaning” in my art is a verb; it expresses the desire, the longing for meaning, by providing the occasion for it. You are asked to share in both its genuine emotion and the revulsion of it.

This work was inspired byKathleen O’Gorman’s documentary film “Boundaries”, which was composed of interviews with refugees detained at our southern border. Art doesn’t heal such grievances; but it can reveal them. If there is any redemption for our inhumanity toward one another, it is within the irrepressible humanity that art attempts to provide.

The Garbo Figures

The Model, posing as Greta Garbo, the actress, the pretender, posing as Pierrot, the character, as photographed by Cecil Beaton, as rendered in glass, a bloodless paradox of volume and light…does not offer grace or harmony or truth…but rather human frailty, the impermanence and bewildering uncertainty of being in the world, the cruel comedy of being lost, placeless, purposeless, faithless, disillusioned…and charmingly indifferent, self possessed, unapologetic.
